What is normally supported?

  • Major generic top-level domains, including .com, .net and .org.
  • Newer generic endings such as .app, .dev, .shop and many others.
  • Country-code endings whose registries publish an RDAP service, including .uk.
  • Internationalised domains when the responsible registry accepts the corresponding Unicode or encoded form.

Why isn’t there a fixed list?

Registry support changes over time. Rather than maintain a stale hand-written list, Domain Readout checks the authoritative bootstrap data during a lookup. This also ensures that requests are sent to the correct registry service instead of a guessed provider.

The IANA bootstrap registry maps top-level domains to their RDAP service URLs. Domain Readout follows that published mapping during a lookup. This approach supports changing assignments and new services without presenting an old directory as a guarantee.

Generic top-level domains

Generic endings include long-established domains such as.com, .net and .org, plus newer endings such as .app, .dev and.shop. ICANN's registration data policy has made RDAP the standard lookup route for generic top-level domain records. The exact fields still depend on the responsible registry and registrar.

Country-code domains

Country-code registries set their own policies and adoption schedules. Many publish RDAP, including the service used for.uk lookups, while others use a separate public lookup or return different levels of detail. Read the UK WHOIS and RDAP guidefor the Nominet transition and privacy context.

What happens when RDAP is unavailable?

You will see a clear message that no RDAP service is published for the domain ending. This does not mean that the domain is unregistered. Its registry may use a separate lookup service or may not yet provide public RDAP coverage.

An unsupported ending is different from an unregistered domain. Likewise, no returned domain object does not guarantee that a name can be registered: it can be reserved, restricted or unavailable through a particular registrar.

Rate limits and fair use

Public lookups are intended for normal interactive research. Automated bulk collection is restricted to protect registry services and keep the lookup available to everyone. The current public allowance is 30 lookups per ten-minute window, with temporary identifiers that expire after the window and are removed periodically.
